Previously on our seriesRemote Connected Front-Line Workers” : The pandemic has broken down the barriers when it comes to operations and maintenance, historically operated in separate silos …

As remote connected workers become more and more prevalent additional aspects of the work life will be incorporated.  What we have describes so far is primarily related operational upsets, when workers are reacting to issues on-site.  Of course, there is the other side of the equation.  When the upset occurred, what was the plan that was being followed at the time.  Now that we’re capturing the response to O&M issues, the next step is to complete the loop and make a better plan for the future.

Our customers, in collaboration with our research and development team are validating the best process for managing a library of configurable tasks and jobs so that there is a complete plan on the books for responding to urgent scenarios.  This plan is synchronized with Microsoft Outlook such that the schedule appears on the user’s calendar.  Using Microsoft Office 365 we will show the users availability and react to changes in the calendar.  Just as we do in the operational phase with acting and sharing, we will deliver tasks at the right time, to the right person at the right place.

With the plan in place, the remote connected worker starts from a proactive position.  They can see their daily tasks before beginning their route.  The plan for any worker is then used to filter the information from the entire plant or project such that the remote connected user is not overwhelmed.  The worker only has to deal with those localized actions and chat histories that pertain to their specific plan.

As always, security is top priority.  Due to the potential safety issues related to the actions that the worker will be performing, the planned actions can be locked with a password or PIN.  These actions may also be set to require validation by the remote connected workers’ manager.  This not only helps in the safety and security of the workers’ actions, it is a particularly valuable training tool for inexperienced workers and a safeguard against human error.

The future of AI is moving rapidly and has almost unlimited potential for improving the effectiveness of remote connected workers.  Some of the prominent ideas being developed include adapting to changing situations, more subtle ways to filter and analyze historical data, learning from decisions made previously and automatically adjusting the plan of record by reacting to various factors such as changes to availability of personnel and other resources.

The future of remote connected workers in the post pandemic world is looking very bright.
