China state grid has put the emphasis on the need to move to a digitalized power grid in the next few years. For the winter Olympic Games, many Olympic sites’ infrastructures embraced new approaches in IoT, data analytics, and automation of work process with the help of AI.

State Grid Operation and Maintenance companies have been required to improve on the quality of service, which targets a reduction of power grid outage due to equipment failures and a reduction of the impact of maintenance operation on business operations and people’s comfort, without impeding the existing infrastructures. An incremental technology for an incremental approach was fundamental.

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading all over the world, sports competitions have been completely disrupted and forced the media to work in more flexible and mobile workspace. The Olympic Games broadcasting service center is a neuralgic center of the new media organization. The use of Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technology to ensure the power supply of the home of the world’s media during the event has become an opportunistic and realistic choice.

The China National Convention Center (国家会议中心) was an ideal candidate to showcase the new approach from State Grid OM teams and Beijing FengTai district power company (北京丰台供电局) was chosen as a test candidate.

The innovative Low voltage non-intrusive digitalization solution from PowerGo AIoT company was selected. Giving the ability to improve on existing LV installation (floor level cabinet) thanks to a safe plug and play sensor, PowerGo was able to install their data acquisition system within a couple of hours at FengTai power company HQ, keeping track of all energy data from this 3 floors building, from the HVAC, lighting to the plug socket usage. PowerGo solution can provide real time data on energy, predictive insights, fault location and load management.

PowerGo and FengTai Power Company chose PcVue as a power monitoring system for its flexibility and capacity to acquire data via MQTTs and running the platform locally and on the cloud (Alicloud in that case). PcVue was able to share its collected data to the analytics platform and to the field service team platform.

The analytics platform runs on Unix and connects to PostGreSQL.

PcVue is a MQTT subscriber and a MQTT publisher so, if using its own proprietary DB or SQL DB is not enough, it has no problem sharing data via MQTT to any connectors to a TSDB (influx DB) or data processing engine (Kafka). PcVue has been in the power and building control market for decades so it also boasts native support for BACnet, DALI, Lon, or IEC protocol which guarantees interoperability between IoT cloud platform and legacy systems. OPC UA and ADO.net interface are also available to bridge data with ERP, manufacturing and other systems more easily as well.

Regarding the Field Service OM platform, it is actually a sister product of the PcVue portfolio. It’s called ContextVue, it managed asset description, localization, maintenance operations via an APP, SnapVue, and interacts with the SCADA system’s real time data. By connecting the FSOM to the SCADA, FengTai power company can therefore leverage all the data and predictions it can collect from PowerGo IoT solutions.

If PowerGo detects one electrical cabinet is acting erratically and predict a date before failure, the control room operator can alert a field operator via the chat features of SnapVue. It can ask and dispatch the operator to check the equipment. Thanks to GPS, Bluetooth and NFC technology, the operator gets the information only on the defective equipment. He isn’t bothered by information that are not relevant for this specific intervention.

He can access relevant documentation (video, text) via a simple click, he can send a video, a picture, and even chat with an expert at the central room if necessary. All the information he inputs on site can then be sent directly to the ML DB of PowerGo and labels the issue at hand which will improve the ML algorithm. Now imagine no one is in the central room when an alert appears. The dispatch process can be fully automated thanks to PcVue Bot engine. Expert advices will in the long term be replaced by the Bot Engine as well.

PcVue guarantees opportunity to integrate future technology and keep relevant even when technologies become obsolescent.

To ensure the success of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, those technologies have been rigorously tested for the past months and successfully passed the test.
