Summary:

This article explains the redundancy with two network cards

Details:

This form of redundancy is of the ‘hot standby’ type:

  • Connections are established and maintained on two links.
  • Only one connection is active.

There is no concept of primary and secondary connections i.e. a connection remains active so long as it is not broken.

On start-up:

  • The local station tries to establish two client connections with the remote station.
  • The first remote station that responds is designated as active, the other as passive.

On break of connection:

  • The standby becomes active.

Repeated attempts are made to re-connect on the disconnected link.

On re-establishing a connection:

  • The active connection remains in use.
