Summary:

Unable to repair, modify, or patch, due to impossible access to the installation or reference media.
Details:

When the installation source media is a DVD or an ISO image, an error may occur in maintenance mode or during patching.

Following windows are sequentially displayed:

Ask for source media

Inform that Admin privilege is required

Error 1706

Maintenance operation is aborted

This behavior is due to the new default policy options of Windows Installer.

Workaround:

There are 2 very simple workarounds:

  • Launch the maintenance directly from the installation media, if possible,
  • Copy the contents of the installation media to a local disk.

Fix:

To avoid such a behavior Windows Installer policy options have to be changed.

Below There are 2 ways to operate.

  1. Change Windows Installer policy, via Group Policy Editor:
  • Run: gpedit.msc
  • Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Installer,
  • Set « Allow users to use media source while elevated » to « Enabled »,
  • And Apply.
  1. Change Windows Installer policy, via the registry database:
  • Run: regedit
  • Search for Key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
  • Create a REG_DWORD « AllowLockdownMedia » with a value equal to 1.
Warning Do not make unconsidered modifications to the registry!
Information This behavior was observed on Windows Server 2016, but may appear on other O.S.
