Summary:

How to detect breaks in connection

Details:

Connection breaks are notified by the NETBIOS API. A time-out on sending data is configured for the connection. By default this is 20 seconds.

It is inadvisable to set a shorter time-out since the Ethernet network is not deterministic; it does not guarantee response times when the network is overloaded. PcVue thus depends on the NETBIOS API and hence on the transport protocol used to detect connection breaks.

To limit this dependence and to secure against a fault in the network driver, you can configure a multi-station watchdog period for a connection. This makes it possible to send a watchdog message across the client connection to the server on the remote station and to await an answer. If the answer is not received within 10 seconds, a further test is run. The number of repeats is limited to two.

If there is still no answer then the connection is treated as broken.
