Applies to:

PcVue all versions.

Summary:

This article describes how to ensure that Hidden and Read-only files do not prevent copying of the Reference project from the local ‘Usr’ folder.

Details:

At the station that manages the software versions, you can copy the Reference project by starting PcVue with the Run option -r or -x. Sometimes the process stops unexpectedly, especially with versions earlier than 7.20. The copying of the reference project may stop without any error message, which shows that PcVue has not been notified that it has failed. That can happen when there are files in the reference project’s folders with Hidden or Read-only attributes.

The problem may be caused in the first place by the  Windows Explorer window, when you request a view of the files in the project’s ‘B’ folder (the local library of images) in either ‘Thumbnails’ or ‘Filmstrip’ format. Windows automatically adds a hidden file called Thumbs.db to the folder to index the images.

Solution

Here is a work-around:

  1. In Windows Explorer, show the system files (e.g. in Windows XP: use Tools.Folder Options to open the Folder Options dialog. In the View tab, tick the option ‘Show hidden files and folders’ and untick ‘Hide protected operating system files’).

Windows_Explorer_Folder_Options_dialog_View_tab

  1. Open the Reference project (in the PcVue’s Usr folder).

Windows_Explorer_thumbnails_file

  1. Show the Attributes column (right-click on the column headings and select Attributes).
  2. Remove any files with Hidden or Read-only attributes.
  3. Save the project as the Reference version.
  4. Restart PcVue with the Run option -r or -x.

PcVue will recommence its copying of the reference project.

Note

Windows will create Thumbs.db again the next time you open its Explorer in, or then select, either ‘Thumbnails’ or ‘Filmstrip’ view.
